The UCF Knights (2-0; 1-0 AAC) moved up to #11 in the AP and # 12 in the Coaches Poll after crushing East Carolina (0-1; 0-1 AAC) 51-28. As reported by the American Athletic Conference:

GREENVILLE, N.C. — Dillon Gabriel threw for 408 yards and four touchdowns to help No. 13 UCF beat East Carolina 51-28 on Saturday to open both teams’ American Athletic Conference schedule.

Jaylon Robinson and Marlon Williams each had huge games as Gabriel’s top targets for the Knights (2-0, 1-0). Robinson had nine catches for 150 yards and two touchdowns, while Williams had a career-best 13 catches for 136 yards.

Throw in Greg McCrae’s short first-quarter scoring run to lead a productive ground game, and UCF finished with 632 yards with its fast-paced offense pushing the tempo to keep the pressure on. The Knights had a penalty-filled start in the first quarter — including four false-start penalties while trying to get off their first offensive snap — before settling in and blowing the game open with a pair of touchdowns in the final 5 minutes before halftime.

Holton Ahlers threw for 215 yards and three TDs for the Pirates (0-1, 0-1), who were making a delayed start to the season after coronavirus-related scheduling changes. And it came in an essentially empty Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium due to COVID-19 protocols, with only a smattering of player family members in attendance.

ECU scored on its opening drive, but lost three first-half turnovers and didn’t make it back to the end zone until the Knights led 41-7 early in the third. By the time it was over, the school said the Pirates had come within 2 yards of matching the most allowed in any season opener in program history.

This was the second road game to start the season for the Knights, who opened with a 28-point win at Georgia Tech while amassing 660 yards. While the offense hummed along again, Josh Heupel’s squad will have to start cleaning up a penalty problem. UCF had 19 penalties for 139 yards, with 10 coming in the first quarter and seven of those false-start flags.

The Knights play their first home game next Saturday against Tulsa. Kickoff is set for 7:30pm and the game will be televised on ESPN2. The Pirates travel to Georgia State next Saturday. Check out video highlights of the Knights’ win over ECU, courtesy of the AAC, below:

The UCF Knights’ 2020 football season got off to an amazing start on Saturday in a 49-21 rout of Georgia Tech. As reported by the AAC:

ATLANTA — Dillon Gabriel threw for a career-best 417 yards and four touchdowns to lead No. 13/14 UCF (1-0; 0-0 AAC) to a 49-21 victory over Georgia Tech (1-1; 1-0 ACC) in the Knights’ season opener Saturday.

After giving up a long return on the opening kickoff, UCF rebounded behind its left-handed sophomore to beat a Georgia Tech team that was looking to build on a big road win in its first game.

Tre Nixon and Marlon Williams each hauled in a pair of TD passes as Gabriel eclipsed his previous career high of 365 yards in a game last season at East Carolina. He finished 27 of 41, also eclipsing his career high for completions and matching his mark for most scoring passes in a game.

After falling behind 28-7, Georgia Tech (1-1) climbed within a touchdown on a pair of scores by freshman Jahmyr Gibbs, who also had a long kickoff return to set up the Yellow Jackets’ first TD.

But Gabriel and the Knights pulled away in the fourth quarter before a socially distanced crowd of about 11,000 at 55,000-seat Bobby Dodd Stadium.

Showing off its running back depth, UCF got rushing TDs from Greg McCrae, Otis Anderson and Bentavious Thompson.

Coming off a 3-9 season in Geoff Collins coaching debut, Georgia Tech opened 2020 by rallying for a 16-13 win at Florida State.

The Yellow Jackets got off to a brilliant start against UCF. Gibbs returned the opening kickoff 75 yards, setting up freshman quarterback Jeff Sims’ 1-yard touchdown run just 55 seconds into the game.

UCF bounced right back, driving 75 yards in eight plays capped by Gabriel’s 6-yard touchdown pass to Nixon.

Georgia Tech squandered a couple of chances to reclaim control of the game, coming up with no points on two drives deep into UCF territory.

Sims fumbled the ball away at the Knights 8 and freshman Jude Kelley’s 27-yard field goal was blocked.

It was the fourth blocked kick in two games for Kelley, who had two field goals and an extra point swatted away in the victory at Florida State.

Kelley’s woes prompted the Yellow Jackets to make a change during the game. Another freshman, Gavin Stewart, came on to handle the extra points on Georgia Tech’s last two TDs.

The Knights showed they are again in the mix to be a top contender for a New Year’s Six bowl. Gabriel is a dynamic quarterback who fits perfectly in the up-tempo offense, and he’s got plenty of weapons at his disposal. Williams had 10 catches for 154 yards, and Jaylon Robinson added six catches for 105 yards.

Sims again showed flashes of promise in his second college game, but he simply made too many mistakes to beat a team of UCF’s caliber. He was 18 of 36 for 244 yards with a pair of interceptions. The Yellow Jackets also lost three fumbles.

UCF plays its second straight road game to begin the season, facing East Carolina next Saturday in its American Athletic Conference opener.
