Abstinence Only Programs Cause Adverse Effects

Filed under: GLBT Social Issues and Civil Rights — Dr. Christopher Blackwell @ 04:33

abstinence.jpgA study released today appearing in the January issue of the research journal Pediatrics adds yet more evidence-based data refuting the use of abstinence-only programs to educate youth about sexual activities. The study found teens who pledge to remain virgins until marriage are just as likely to have premarital sex as those who do not. Perhaps even more alarming, teens who make “virginity pledges” are also significantly less likely to use condoms and other forms of birth control when they do have sex. Many studies have shown the ineffectiveness of these programs while none have supported their efficacy; they are also based completely on a heterosexual model of sexuality.

While gay males remain at highest risk of transmitting and contracting HIV, abstinence-only programs ignore homosexuality and instead base sexual relationships as the ultimate reward of marriage attainment. Since marriage is not possible for most gay couples (and most states now have discriminatory bans in place), homosexual activity is invalidated. This also highlights the moronic conservative ideology of only providing taxpayer funds to abstinence programs.

This does nothing but lead to more social ills and problems, including increasing already high rates of teen pregnancy, sexually-transmitted infections, and HIV. Instead, sexual education programs should be comprehensive and include education about condom use, birth control, and homosexual activities. Plenty of research does support these programs as effective. Hopefully the intelligent and progressive incoming administration will reverse the federal regulations which mandate sole funding of abstinence programs put into place by the Bush Administration. It’s time for intelligence and reality to take the place of religious-fueled idiocy.

Phantom of the Opera Sequel Gets Greenlight

Filed under: Performing Arts — Dr. Christopher Blackwell @ 18:03

phantom.jpgAccording to Playbill, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s sequel to the original Phantom of the Opera currently entitled Phantom: Love Never Dies is moving forward and will simultaneously open in three different territories at the end of 2009. Webber is approaching his sequel to his original masterpiece with amazing care. The first act was workshopped in the summer of 2008 at Lloyd Webber’s private Sydmonton Festival at his Berkshire country home. We’ve already done the first act,” Lloyd Webber explained, “and rather like The Woman in White, where the first act worked wonderfully, what we cannot do is presume that the second act is going to as well.”

Working with director Jack O’Brien, who staged the Sydmonton workshop, and lyricist Glenn Slater, he is now writing the rest of the show, and when they have completed the work, “we are going to do a workshop of the second act, then take a month off and do it again with both halves this time and then we’ll see.” Although Webber says he has a good idea who the Phantoms will be, rumors are circulating that Hugh Jackman and Gerard Butler (who played the Phantom in the 2005 film version of the musical) might get the starring role in 2 of the productions.

Research Links Gay Suicide to Parents’ Reaction

Filed under: GLBT Social Issues and Civil Rights — Dr. Christopher Blackwell @ 17:48

suicide1.jpgWhile plenty of epidemiologic data indicate gay youth have the highest suicide risk of any subset of the population, a new research study highlights the significant role parental reaction to their child’s sexual orientation has in encouraging suicide: “…the study showed that teens who experienced negative feedback were more than eight times as likely to have attempted suicide, nearly six times as vulnerable to severe depression and more than three times at risk of drug use. One of the most startling findings was that being forbidden to associate with gay peers was as damaging as being physically beaten or verbally abused by their parents in terms of negative feedback, [social worker Caitlin] Ryan said.”

In the two-part study, Ryan and her colleagues first interviewed 53 families with gay teenagers to identify 106 specific behaviors that could be considered ‘accepting’ or ‘rejecting.’ For example, blaming a youth for being bullied at school, shielding him from other relatives or belittling her appearance for not conforming to social expectations fell into the rejecting category. Next, they surveyed 224 white and Latino gay people between ages 21 and 25 to see which of the behaviors they had experienced growing up. The responses then were matched against the participants’ recent histories of severe depression, suicide attempts, substance abuse and unsafe sexual behavior. While the results might seem intuitive, Ryan said the study, funded by the California Endowment, was the first to establish a link between health problems in gay youths and their home environments.

Don’t Let the Door Hit You

Filed under: Politics — Dr. Christopher Blackwell @ 02:22

downward_graph_small.jpgA new CNN/Opinion Research Poll just released shows seventy-five percent of those questioned  said they’re glad George Bush is going; 23 percent indicated they’ll miss him. A new national poll suggests that three out of four Americans feel President Bush’s departure from office is coming not a moment too soon. “Earlier this year, Bush scored some of the lowest presidential approval ratings we’ve seen in half a century, so it’s understandable that the public is eager for a new president to step in,” said Keating Holland, CNN polling director. At just 23 days, the end is quite near for Bush, who many political scientists have indicated will be forever remembered as the worst president in the history of the United States. Bush’s approval ratings have sunk lower than any president before him, including Carter (28%), Nixon (24%), and Truman (22%). Bush’s lowest ratings (19%) were marked twice during his presidency–the dates of 2/16/08-2/19/08 and 9/16/08-9/19/08. Finally, in a light of hope, President-elect Barack Obama currently has an 82% approval rating for his handling of his transition into office. President Obama is inheriting a government in complete devastation due to the horrific “leadership” of the last 8 years. Let’s hope our new President is able to mend the damage Bush has caused and begin to make the United States the prosperous nation she once was.

Madonna Annihilates Tour Profit Records!

Filed under: Popular Music — Dr. Christopher Blackwell @ 03:19

hardcandy3.jpgWith the completion of Madonna’s final show in Sao Paulo Brazil last evening–one of eleven record-breaking performances in South America– the Material Girl’s Sticky & Sweet Tour reigns supreme by becoming the number one largest tour in history by a solo artist, it was confirmed today by Live Nation, the tour’s international producer. Her 58 shows in Europe, the US, Canada, Mexico, and South America played for a staggering 2,350,282 (million) fans and sold over (USD) $280,000,000 in tickets. Madonna’s multi Grammy-nominated Hard Candy debuted at number one earlier this year in over 37 countries! If you missed the Sticky & Sweet Tour, I personally think you missed the best of the last 4 concerts Madonna has performed. With a healthy mix of Madonna’s timeless classics and her hits of today, this tour truly rocked! Let’s hope a DVD is on the way! Congratulations Madonna! At 50 years of age, the Material Girl still proves she is by far the most beloved performer of all-time! (Note: Portions of this article come from Madonna’s official press release).

Milk

Filed under: Film and Entertainment — Dr. Christopher Blackwell @ 03:51

milkposter.jpgTonight I was able to make it to a screening of the new Gus Van Sant film Milk at The Enzian Theater in Winter Park and I have to say, this is by far the best film of 2008. Harvey Milk was the first ever openly gay political candidate to be elected to public office. Milk became a member of the Board of Supervisors of the City of San Francisco in 1977 and would face multiple anti-gay initiatives fiercely and “head-on” before his untimely death in 1978. He also worked to pass a strict anti-discrimination policy in San Francisco in a time when states all over the country were repealing civil rights initiatives for gays and lesbians and an aggressive California-based bill that would outlaw homosexuals as teachers within public schools (lead by Christian right wing-nut Anita Bryant) was being heavily pushed. If you don’t know anything about the life of Harvey Milk, I would encourage you to keep it that way until you see the movie. The film is an absolute masterpiece and Sean Penn continues to prove he is simply one of the best actors of our time. Penn has been nominated for the Golden Globe for Best Actor for his portrayal of Milk. Given the passage of Florida’s Amendment 2, California’s Proposition 8, and Arizona’s Proposition 102 this past election season, this film’s relevance is palpable. Milk was able to shine a light of hope in a time that was very dark for America’s gay and lesbian communities. If you’re gay, you will probably feel a strong sense of connection to the times of Harvey Milk and the times of today. While that is unfortunate, let it serve as an impetus to get you involved in your community and to live your life open and honestly to those you love, those you work with, and those who are significant in your life. If there’s one lesson Harvey Milk left us, it’s that no matter what, “you’ve got to have hope.” I loathe The Enzian and usually refuse to see films there given its pretentious atmosphere and expensive cost. But Milk is definitely worth the trip to The Enzian. Go see Milk… You’ll find the film amazingly inspirational and moving. Milk was released limited on November 26, 2008 from Focus Features. For showtimes in your area and for more information on Milk, visit the film’s official Web Site @ http://www.filminfocus.com/focusfeatures/film/milk/.

Obama Responds to Warren Concerns

Filed under: Politics — Dr. Christopher Blackwell @ 14:40

obama.jpgWhen President-elect (and TIME magazine’s Person of the Year for 2008) announced controversial and ultra-conservative Evangelical minister Rick Warren was going to be delivering a speech at his inauguration ceremony, GLBT advocacy groups were outraged. Warren has been an outspoken opponent of GLBT equality (and just about every other social issue) and has consistently supported discriminatory and degrading ideologies towards GLBT persons. Joe Solmonese, President of the Human Rights Campaign, the nation’s largest GLBT equality advocacy group released the following letter to the President-elect, linked here yesterday:

http://www.hrc.org/11793.htm

Obama responded today: “Well, let me start by talking about my own views. I think it is no secret that I am a fierce advocate for equality for gay and lesbian Americans. It is something I have been consistent on and something I intend to continue to be consistent on during my presidency…What I’ve also said is that it is important for America to come together even though we may have disagreements on certain social issues…And I would note that a couple of years ago I was invited to Rick Warren’s church to speak, despite his awareness that I held views entirely contrary to his when it came to gay and lesbian rights, when it came to issues like abortion….Nevertheless, I had an opportunity to speak, and that dialogue, I think, is a part of what my campaign’s been all about, that we’re never going to agree on every single issue. What we have to do is create an atmosphere where we can disagree without being disagreeable, and then focus on those things that we hold in common as Americans. So Rick Warren has been invited to speak, Dr. Joseph Lowery — who has deeply contrasting views to Rick Warren about a whole host of issues — is also speaking.”

Dr. Lowery, an African American minister is a major force in the civil rights movement and has been a champion of GLBT equality. While I disagree with Obama’s selection of Warren to provide a speech at his inauguration, actions speak louder than words. Obama will ultimately be judged on his policies which affect GLBT equality much more than a bigoted preacher selected to give a speech at his inauguration.

Iraqi Journalist Shows His Gratitude

Filed under: Politics — Dr. Christopher Blackwell @ 20:56

bush.bmpAt a press conference in Iraq Sunday, outgoing President George W. Bush got a striking reminder of just how unpopular he is around the world when an Iraqi journalist removed both of his shoes and hurled them at Bush’s head. The man, identified as Muntadhar al-Zaidi, an Iraqi journalist with Egypt-based al-Baghdadia television network — could be heard yelling in Arabic: “This is a farewell … you dog!” The sentiments perhaps highlight what the vast majority of the world (including Americans) believe about Bush’s failed presidency and erred war in Iraq. But regardless, the actions of this man were deplorable and show a blatant disregard for whatever little positive effect the US presence in Iraq has provided. While most of the world is counting the minutes until he’s finally out of office, Iraqis should be at least a little grateful for the democracy America has provided their country. While the cost has been high to Iraq, it has also been high for the United States, who has sacrificed the lives of thousands of soldiers and paid the billions of dollars to bring freedom to their people. Bush’s failures have been painfully obvious; but the actions of this journalist are completely unacceptable.

Circus Debuts @ #1

Filed under: Popular Music — Dr. Christopher Blackwell @ 20:28

circus1.jpgPop Princess Britney Spears latest album Circus has debuted as the #1 album in America, according to Billboard. In less than a week, Circus has sold over 1/2 a million copies while its first single “Womanizer” also peaked at #1 in the singles category. While Spears’ previous release Blackout also debuted  @ #1, it quickly fell down the charts amid her increasingly negative publicity and lack of promotion. But industry insiders say Circus is altogether different, proven not only by the #1 single “Womanizer” but also the quick skyrocketing of the second single “Circus,” which gained the most radio airplay of any single since its release last week. Britney’s taught and hot body is also being shown-off in her high-profile performances of “Circus” on the TV circuit. Spears’ manager sums it pretty good, “Professionally, she’s feeling great…and it’s great for her to hear she has the #1 album again.” Debuting over a decade ago, Britney Spears is a multiplatinum sensation and has sold over 30 million copies of her albums in the United States alone. Circus is available from JIVE Records in retailers nationwide or for digital download through iTunes.

Dems Demand Crist Pay

Filed under: Politics — Dr. Christopher Blackwell @ 19:25

democraticimage1.jpgFlorida’s Democratic Party is demanding Republican Governor Charlie Crist repay taxpayers for his over-the-top taxpayer subsidized trip to Europe he took last Summer as part of a “trade mission.” Former Congresswoman and Florida Democratic Party Chair Karen Thurman stated, “With tours of Buckingham Palace and visits to the Eiffel Tower on his agenda, it was clear at the time that his trip served as a taxpayer-financed vacation. While some positive results may come from the trip, the lavish accommodations and first class travel were beyond excessive.” The over $430,000 trip comes at a time when Florida is operating on one of its largest budget deficits ever. Looks like the wonderful “leadership” the Republicans gave us at the federal level is following their “trickle-down” economic myth they’ve subscribed to for years. I only hope Floridians show some intelligence and repay Crist at the polls in 2 years.
