UCF Knights Prepare for Miami

Filed under: UCF Sports — Dr. Christopher Blackwell @ 19:24

The UCF Knights Football team is making preparations for what could be the most exciting game of their season. The Knights host the #9 University of Miami Hurricanes this Saturday. UCF’s squad took Monday-Wednesday off last week to heal and get some much needed rest. Practice resumed Thursday. The Knights (3-2; 1-2 CUSA) are coming off a strong 32-14 victory against Conference USA foes the Memphis Tigers on 10/4 while the ‘Canes (4-1; 2-1 ACC) crushed I-AA FAMU 48-16 last Saturday. Although the Knights are the definite underdog, the 58,000-seat sold-out stadium will provide some deafening crowd noise that should help give the Knights’ defense some help. Miami won’t be alone, however. UM sold all 10,000 of their ticket allotment. This marks the second matchup between the teams. Miami narrowly defeated UCF last season 20-14 in Miami. Kickoff is set for 7:30pm at UCF’s Brighthouse Networks Stadium and the game is being nationally televised on CBS. The Colleges of Nursing and Health & Public Affairs will hold their Tailgate Party outside the Fairwinds Alumni Center from 2:00pm-6:30pm. Come support the Knights to victory against the Miami Hurricanes! GO KNIGHTS!!! BLACK & GOLD!!!

Princeton Review Ranks UCF’s MBA Program in Top 10 in US

Great news came today for the College of Business Administration at the University of Central Florida (UCF). UCF’s Master of Business Administration program was ranked in the Top 10 by the Princeton Review, which ranks the top 301 Business Schools in the United States. UCF was one of only a couple of public universities ranked in the Top 10 in the nation and was the only Florida program to make the rankings. Ranked as #10 for the best administered program, UCF sits besides such prestigious business programs as Harvard University, New York University, and Dartmouth College. Here are the top 10 programs ranked by Princeton Review:

1. Harvard University — Harvard Business School
2. Vanderbilt University — Owen Graduate School of Management
3. University of Michigan — Ann Arbor Steven M. Ross School of Business
4. Northwestern University — Kellogg School of Management
5. Elon University — Martha and Spencer Lover School of Business

Erasure Begins Work on New Album

Filed under: Popular Music — Dr. Christopher Blackwell @ 00:41

erasurenightbird.jpg  Erasure members Andy Bell and Vince Clark met in New York City earlier this week to begin work on a new album. Erasure’s last album Light at the End of the World was released in 2007 and was followed by sold-out performances for their Light at the End of the World Tour, which made its way to Hard Rock Live in Orlando in July of that year. The duo have been working on solo projects for the past 2 years, including a re-team with Alison Monet of Yaz for Clark and a new forthcoming solo album by Andy Bell. Erasure Information Service is reporting the new album should be released by the end of 2010. Hopefully, a new tour will accompany its release. Erasure’s fan site (erasureinfo.com) will keep updated posts on Erasure’s progress on the new album.

President Barack Obama Wins Nobel Peace Prize

Filed under: American Life and Society,National and International News — Dr. Christopher Blackwell @ 00:00

President Barack Obama by tehboypop.  President Barack Obama, who has been in the White House for little more than 9 months, was named the recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize for 2009 today. The White House was notified at 5:00a.m. this morning. President Obama joins a small and prestigious list of world leaders who have been honored with the reward. When Al Gore received the reward in 2007, I remember feeling so sad that we should have had a Nobel Peace Prize winner as President; but instead, we were handed a President who would eventually earn the lowest approval ratings of any President in American history and who was responsible for an endless number of social, economic, and military disasters. President Obama was humbled by his selection:

“I am both surprised and deeply humbled by the decision of the Nobel Committee. Let me be clear: I do not view it as a recognition of my own accomplishments, but rather as an affirmation of American leadership on behalf of aspirations held by people in all nations. To be honest, I do not feel that I deserve to be in the company of so many of the transformative figures who’ve been honored by this prize — men and women who’ve inspired me and inspired the entire world through their courageous pursuit of peace. But I also know that this prize reflects the kind of world that those men and women, and all Americans, want to build — a world that gives life to the promise of our founding documents. And I know that throughout history, the Nobel Peace Prize has not just been used to honor specific achievement; it’s also been used as a means to give momentum to a set of causes. And that is why I will accept this award as a call to action — a call for all nations to confront the common challenges of the 21st century.”

CONGRATULATIONS President Obama…The United States of America is PROUD that you have been selected as the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize Recipient!

Great Grayson Interview

Filed under: Politics — Dr. Christopher Blackwell @ 23:51

There’s been some “controversy” (editor’s note: usually quotation marks in a political thread mean whatever is in quotations has been perpetuated by ridiculous right-wing Republican moronism) around comments made by my Congressman Alan Grayson (of course I voted for him and can’t wait to re-elect him in 2012!). Grayson called out the Republicans for continuing to demonstrate their failure as a Party, highlighting their inability to make much-needed healthcare reform a reality. Today, OpEd (on MSNBC) featured Alan Grayson, who continues to work hard for my district. I applaud him for having the guts to expose the Republicans for what they are–a lie machine. Lady GaGa ROCKS SNL

Filed under: Popular Music — Dr. Christopher Blackwell @ 19:52

Although Saturday Night Live continues to make audiences question why it is still on the air with its non-funny skits and terrible writing (a skit featuring Madonna and Lady GaGa appeared akward, unfunny, and a waste of the appearance of a superstar), it got a much-needed shot-in-the arm Saturday. The pop sensation Lady Gaga performed her new single “Paparazzi” and also gave an intimate piano-laden performance of a medley of songs from The Fame and new song “Bad Romance.” Watch the spectacular performances below:

Knights Crush Memphis, Next-Up Miami Hurricanes

Filed under: UCF Sports — Dr. Christopher Blackwell @ 01:58

UCF running back Brynn Harvey leaves behind Memphis defensive back Deante' Lamar as Harvey runs for a touchdown during the Memphis at UCF college football game at Bright House Networks Stadium in Orlando.  The UCF Knights handed the Tigers of Memphis a solid loss on Saturday in-front of a large and boisterous crowd on Parents’ Day at Bright House Networks Stadium. After running into some offensive stalls during the first half, the Knights turned-up the heat during the second half, forcing multiple turnovers and having mostly scoring drives.  Running back Brynn Harvey (a recruit out of Largo) carried the ball 42 times and accumulated a whopping 219 yards of rushing while the Knights offense racked-up a total of 475 yards. The Knights now have a bye-week and will have the opportunity to get some much needed rest and recovery before taking-on the #17 Miami Hurricanes at home. The game is sold-out. The UCF CON/COHPA Tailgate Party will be held in Memory Mall (right next to Fairwinds Alumni Center). The time is TBA. GO KNIGHTS!!! BEAT THE ‘CANES!!!
