Amid the horrific destruction from the Oklahoma tornadoes, this ray of hope emerged. An onlooker happened to see some movement in the disaster zone behind Barbara Garcia, who was being interviewed about her survival. Buried inside the rubble that was once her home, Garcia found her beautiful miniature schnauzer who she thought for sure had perished in the storm. Take a look at their touching reunion below:

More Research Condemns Fox News Channel

Filed under: National and International News,Politics — Dr. Christopher Blackwell @ 01:44

A study conducted by media researchers at Fairleigh Dickinson University has some not too surprising findings about viewers of Fox News. The researchers compared knowledge levels about current events in Egypt and the Middle East using a sample of men and women who watch Fox News and a sample of those who watch no news at all. The findings indicated statistically significant lower knowledge levels about current events in these foreign locations and the impact these events have on the USA in the Fox News viewers. For example, the Fox News Channel viewers were 18-points less likely to know that the Egyptian people actually overthrew their government and 6-points less likely to know the Syrians haven’t done the same. The study’s primary author and Political Science professor Dr. Dan Cassino stated the study indicated the knowledge deficits weren’t related to the network drawing more Republican viewers versus non-Republican viewers. “The results show us that there is something about watching Fox News that leads people to do worse on these questions than those who don’t watch any news at all.” This isn’t the first study to indicate viewers of Fox News as less knowledgeable than watchers of other news channels. A 2010 University of Maryland study indicated Fox News viewers were much more likely to believe false information about American politics.

Terrifying Video of Teens Scaling 377-Foot Bridge in Kiev

Filed under: National and International News — Dr. Christopher Blackwell @ 00:06

800px-moskovskyj_mist_kyiv.jpg A video that will get your blood pumping and heart beating surfaced today from Kiev. A handful of teenagers scaled the Moscow Bridge without harnesses and videotaped the entire adventure. Watching this video made me almost as short of breath as the filmmaker and amateur climber, who is heard breathing heavily throughout. It is over 12 minutes long; but once you start to watch it, you won’t be able to stop. Take a look:

Research Study Shows High Level of Ignorance among Fox News Viewers

Filed under: American Life and Society,National and International News — Dr. Christopher Blackwell @ 01:10

While there have been plenty of research studies assessing the bias of Fox (Faux) News Channel, a new study indicates that those who view Fox News are significantly more likely to be misinformed of factual truths in current events. The study, conducted by the Program on International Policy Attitudes at the University of Maryland, found not only were Faux News viewers more likely to believe falsities about current events, but that the more exposure to the channel viewers had, the more likely they were to be ignorant of factual information. The study compared several national news companies including CNN, MSNBC, NPR, and PBS. Faux News viewers had statistically significant higher levels of ignorance and believed the following items to be actual truths, despite the fact they are all incorrect. The data speak for themselves:

  • Most economists estimate the stimulus caused job losses (12 points more likely)
  • Most economists have estimated the health care law will worsen the deficit (31 points)
  • The economy is getting worse (26 points)
  • Most scientists do not agree that climate change is occurring (30 points)
  • The stimulus legislation did not include any tax cuts (14 points)
  • Their own income taxes have gone up (14 points)
  • The auto bailout only occurred under Obama (13 points)
  • When TARP came up for a vote most Republicans opposed it (12 points)
  • And that it is not clear that Obama was born in the United States (31 points)

    Disappointing Video

Filed under: National and International News — Dr. Christopher Blackwell @ 18:14

A sad video surfaced yesterday that was posted by Army PFC Specialist Robert Rodriguez on his Facebook Page showing him harassing two young  Iraqi boys. Knowing the two do not speak English, he taunts them asking them if they are “fa**ots” and if they engage in certain homosexual acts. He then concludes his ridicule by asking them if they will grow-up to be terrorists. The youngsters, obviously attempting to show gratitude and agreement with whatever the soldier is saying, show approval by nodding yes and giving a “thumbs up” hand gesture. Rodriquez, who in no doubt is in absolute world of trouble with his superiors (and rightly so) says he was bored and wanted to entertain himself by making the video. While the video is repugnant and sad, please remember, as the one soldier interviewed mentions, this is not reflective of the majority of soldiers working hard in Iraq.

Take a $300 Million Luxury Tour

Filed under: National and International News — Dr. Christopher Blackwell @ 15:16

The Wall Street Journal goes for the first time inside the Philippe Starck-designed yacht of Russian billionaire Andrey Melnichenko. It is absolutely stunning and a gigantic show of oppulence. The video tour will leave you amazed to see just how upscale a $300 million yacht is designed inside and out. While I am not a fan of the use of animal skins and furs for clothing or interior design, the 3 minute video tour is definitely one worth taking:

    Skimbleshanks?

Filed under: National and International News — Dr. Christopher Blackwell @ 01:29

While I am not a fan of cats per se, I do love the musical CATS and I also am an avid animal lover. Well, when I read this news from Japan today, it reminded me a lot of my favorite CATS cat: Skimbleshanks: The Railway Cat! Take a look:

The next time you are waiting for a train at the Kinokawa’s Kishi Station in Japan, you better pay your respects to Tama: The Stationmaster Cat by curtsying before her and kissing her paw oh-so gently, because the pussy got a promotion!Japan Probe brings us the very important news that the train operator officially named Tama as their operating officer in a fancy ceremony the other day. This is the first time in history that a cat has held a high-powered executive level position at a railroad company:

President Barack Obama Wins Nobel Peace Prize

Filed under: American Life and Society,National and International News — Dr. Christopher Blackwell @ 00:00

President Barack Obama by tehboypop.  President Barack Obama, who has been in the White House for little more than 9 months, was named the recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize for 2009 today. The White House was notified at 5:00a.m. this morning. President Obama joins a small and prestigious list of world leaders who have been honored with the reward. When Al Gore received the reward in 2007, I remember feeling so sad that we should have had a Nobel Peace Prize winner as President; but instead, we were handed a President who would eventually earn the lowest approval ratings of any President in American history and who was responsible for an endless number of social, economic, and military disasters. President Obama was humbled by his selection:

“I am both surprised and deeply humbled by the decision of the Nobel Committee. Let me be clear: I do not view it as a recognition of my own accomplishments, but rather as an affirmation of American leadership on behalf of aspirations held by people in all nations. To be honest, I do not feel that I deserve to be in the company of so many of the transformative figures who’ve been honored by this prize — men and women who’ve inspired me and inspired the entire world through their courageous pursuit of peace. But I also know that this prize reflects the kind of world that those men and women, and all Americans, want to build — a world that gives life to the promise of our founding documents. And I know that throughout history, the Nobel Peace Prize has not just been used to honor specific achievement; it’s also been used as a means to give momentum to a set of causes. And that is why I will accept this award as a call to action — a call for all nations to confront the common challenges of the 21st century.”

CONGRATULATIONS President Obama…The United States of America is PROUD that you have been selected as the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize Recipient!
