A wonderful child, whose dream was to become a UCF cheerleader, lost her 5-year battle with brain cancer on New Year’s Eve last year. Eight-year old Marlie Dodson was an avid UCF fan who attended UCF football and basketball games adorned in her UCF cheerleader outfit and Black & Gold Knights bandana. Before her death, the entire UCF cheerleading team brought Marlie happiness in the hospital; and Knightro, UCF’s famous mascot, made an appearance at her home before her passing. And while her death brings sadness and mourning, her legacy will live forever. Marlie’s mother, sisters, brother in-law, and sister in-law, all of whom are UCF Alums, have created a scholarship with the College of Nursing for future nurses who wish to work in the field of oncology. Marlie underwent 12 different surgeries, eight weeks of radiation, and countless cycles of chemotherapy; and her mother said the oncology nurses were the ones who touched her soul the most during her most trying of times. Once the scholarship reaches $25,000, it will allow a perpetual scholarship for future oncology nurses. To donate to the fund, contact Katie Korkoz, the College’s Development Officer at (407) 823-1600. Below, take a look at the wonderfully moving video tribute to dear Marlie Dodson:
