Circumcision to Become Major CDC Recommendation in US

After a multitude of studies have found circumcision can reduce HIV infection by almost half in heterosexual men, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is strongly considering making a national health recommendation that all newborn boys be circumcised. Research, largely conducted in Africa where circumcision is rare, indicated the cells which makeup the foreskin of uncircumcised men are highly susceptible to the HIV retrovirus, which greatly enhances the likelihood of HIV transmission and infection from female body fluids during sexual intercourse. While the recommendation is important, the research has not been replicated in gay and bisexual men, who continue to comprise the largest group of Americans who are infected or who are becoming infected with HIV.

Lady GaGa Gives Awesome Performance in England

Filed under: Popular Music — Dr. Christopher Blackwell @ 21:18

It looks like the US isn’t the only country that is becoming a mega-fan of pop sensation Lady GaGa. Although she had a 20 minute delay leading up to her performance, she more than made up for it last night as she performed in England’s V Festival. Watch the video below as GaGa performs “Paparazzi” from The Fame. While similar to her Fame World Ball staging in Orlando’s House of Blues in April, it appears a band has been added. Enjoy:

Sick Sub-Human Poachers Kill & Skin Sumutran Tiger in Zoo

Filed under: Animal Welfare — Dr. Christopher Blackwell @ 14:11

 Tiger

“Sheila, who had been the only Sumatran tiger remaining at the zoo, was killed and skinned on zoo grounds after being drugged by poachers early on Saturday, leaving virtually nothing behind except the innards and a few ribs of the animal, which is critically endangered in the wild. ‘There is no doubt that the killers were professionals because they did their job very cleanly, taking off the skin in the enclosure rather than dragging the 100-kilogram animal out, which could have attracted attention,’ said Didy Wurdjanto, the head of the Jambi Natural Resources Conservation Center.” There is discussion that the poaching could have been an inside job. There are  believed to be between 100 and 400 Sumatran tigers left in the wild. Sickening sub-humans who don’t deserve life…

Pretty Cool Advertisement

Filed under: Film and Entertainment — Dr. Christopher Blackwell @ 01:04

An amazing display of technology is hitting the shelves in next week’s Entertainment Weekly. An actual live video will be played when the reader turns to a 2-page ad promoting CBS’ primetime lineup and is being co-sponsored by Pepsi. See the video below of the ad “in-action.” This is REALLY cool. It might be worth the price of Entertainment Weekly just to see this ad!

Andy Bell’s New Solo Album & Erasure News

Filed under: Popular Music — Dr. Christopher Blackwell @ 17:49

erasurenightbird.jpgErasure Information Service (EIS) released some information today about Andy Bell’s forthcoming solo album and Bell mentioned a little about Erasure re-teaming soon to record their new album:

I was lucky enough to meet up with Andy last week to talk about all sorts of online bits and pieces, and I was lucky enough to hear some finished tracks from his forthcoming solo album and I have to say they sound brilliant! Obviously I will bring you all the news on that as soon as I’m able, but I just wanted to let you all know that it’s in the pipeline… in the meantime I’ve updated Andy’s website with a couple of pictures I took of Andy in the studio with Pascal Gabriel back in May. Andy also confirmed that he is meeting up with Vince again shortly to start work on the new Erasure album!

New Twilight Sequel Trailer Gives Story Outline

Filed under: Movie and Entertainment — Dr. Christopher Blackwell @ 17:37

A new trailer for The Twilight Saga: The New Moon was released today and features some behind-the-scenes commentary by its smoking hott co-star Taylor Lautner. I reluctantly went to see Twilight last year on a date with a guy who really wanted to see it. Dragged to the theater kicking-and-screaming, I actually ended-up LOVING the movie! From the looks of it, The New Moon promises to be just as good, if not better! Here’s the trailer. The Twilight Saga: The New Moon opens November 20, 2009 from Summit Entertainment:

NYC GLBT Homeless Shelter Named in Bea Arthur’s Honor

Filed under: Film and Entertainment,GLBT Social Issues and Civil Rights — Dr. Christopher Blackwell @ 17:27

The late television actress Bea Aurthur will be remembered for her hard work and dedication to the well-being of GLBT youth when the Ali Forney Center will name one of its residences after her after her memorial on September 14th:

In November of 2005, Bea flew to New York City from her home in Los Angeles in order to give a special benefit performance of her one-woman show. The performance raised over $40,000 for the Ali Forney Center. In an interview for Next Magazine Bea explained her decision to offer her support “I’m very, very involved in charities involving youth and the plight of foster children. But these kids at the Ali Forney Center are literally dumped by their families because of the fact that they are lesbian, gay, or transgender – this organization really is saving lives.” Bea continued to offer her support, both as a donor and as an advocate. In one of her very last interviews, published in the New York Blade in May 2008, Bea spoke with pride of having done the benefit for AFC, and indicated that she would do anything to help gay kids disowned by their parents.

Town Hall “Disruptions” Increasingly Ridiculous

Filed under: Politics — Dr. Christopher Blackwell @ 00:49

antirepublican.jpgAlthough I have been quietly laughing at the Republican-staged “disruptions” at Democratic leaders’ townhall meetings over the past couple of weeks, deeming them largely un-newsworthy, ignorance, bigotry, and stupidity couldn’t be more obvious. From gun-toting morons flashing their holsters and delivering hate-filled speech spewing erroneous “facts” to racist rednecks destroying posters of Rosa Parks or swastika-painting vandals, these displays are becoming more of a “Circus” than Britney Spears’ latest concert tour. And, let’s be honest people. These “protests” consist of nothing more than the same ridiculous sour-puss people who staged the laughable tea-party protests shortly after President Obama was elected. These have NOTHING to do with healthcare reform; these right wingnuts are using healthcare reform as a platform to continue their crying spree over the election of a Black President and a changing American populace who will continue to ensure conservative lunacy maintains its slow and miserable death.

Madonna’s Sticky & Sweet Tour Still Highest-Grossing Tour

Filed under: Performing Arts,Popular Music — Dr. Christopher Blackwell @ 00:39

hardcandy.jpgAlthough U2 has jumped up to No. 2 on the overall Top Tour rankings year-to-date, Madonna retains the top spot with five more European stadiums reporting totals this week from her “Sticky & Sweet Tour.” One of the stadiums, Stadio Friuli in Udine, Italy had a busy two weeks hosting Madonna on July 16th and Bruce Springsteen just one week later. Both tours played to sellout crowds of more than 28,000. In addition to Stadio Friuli, Springsteen also hit five Spanish markets to close out the European leg of his “Working on a Dream Tour”. He joins Madonna and U2 as the only touring artists surpassing $100 million in ticket sales so far for the year.

Green Day ROCKS the Amway

Filed under: Uncategorized — Dr. Christopher Blackwell @ 03:15

PX00236_9[1]In one of the best concert experiences I have ever had, rock band Green Day played an amazing show Wednesday night at Orlando’s Amway Arena. Most of the set list came from the band’s latest release 21st Century Breakdown and their platinum-smash hit album American Idiot. But, performances of their earlier hits (“Basket Case,” “Minority,” and “Good-Riddance–Time of Your Life”) also punctuated the two-and-a-half hour fully energized concert in-front of a loud and appreciative crowd. The band even pulled several people from the audience on-stage to participate. Keeping their faith (or, lack thereof), lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong “saved” one young concert-goer during the performance of “Before the Lobotomy” from 21st Century Breakdown. And a young guitarist helped the band during “Jesus of Suburbia” while 3 lucky singers entertained the crowd with their renditions of “Longview.” I have wanted to see Green Day live for a very long time. I am grateful I got to see perhaps the most talented band in music perform such a spectacular show! Green Day continues to show their high-level of musical talent and ability while maintaining their extreme popularity and amazingly unique rock sound which both characterizes them and places them high above any other band in rock music today.
