I Hate to Say I Told You So, But…

Filed under: GLBT Social Issues and Civil Rights,Politics — Dr. Christopher Blackwell @ 00:53

Go to fullsize image During the last election, I warned about the harsh economic costs of banning gay marriage. I always laugh how conservatives are the first ones to warn of the evils of government spending but are the ones always pushing for social policies which not only take away rights, but expand the role of government into personal lives and cost taxpayers a TON of money. Research by a top economist in San Francisco has outlined some of the preliminary costs of California’s gay marriage ban, just on the city alone:

A state ban on gay marriage is costing the city of San Francisco millions of dollars a year in lost revenue and increased services, an economist testified Thursday in a lawsuit aimed at overturning the prohibition. Chief city economist Edmund Egan said married people accumulate more wealth and have more to spend on property and consumer goods, which bolsters tax revenue. He also said the city must spend more on health care for uninsured workers because same-sex couples are not always covered under their partner’s employee health care plans.

“It’s clear to me that Proposition 8 has a negative material impact on the city of San Francisco,” he said. “These are impacts that are hard to quantify, but over the long term they can be powerful.” Egan testified during the fourth day of a federal trial on a lawsuit challenging Proposition 8, the ballot measure approved by statewide voters in 2008.

The city was allowed to join the suit to demonstrate that governments bear some of the costs of the ban. Peter Patterson, a lawyer for Proposition 8 sponsors, challenged Egan’s methodology and had him acknowledge during cross-examination that he based many of his estimates on assumptions drawn from the spending habits of opposite-sex couples. The case is being heard by Chief U.S. District Judge Vaughn R. Walker, who said Thursday he was abandoning his push to have the trial broadcast on the Internet because he didn’t want the broadcast issue to distract from the trial itself. Walker disclosed the decision a day after the U.S. Supreme Court indefinitely blocked his plan to record the trial so it could be transmitted to other federal courthouses.

On the witness stand, Egan said San Francisco has seen higher mental health costs because of discrimination against gays and now spends $2.5 million a year on specialized services for them. “I believe that the prohibition of marriage of same-sex couples is a form of discrimination, and it’s reasonable to assume that if that prohibition were removed there would be over time a lessening of the discrimination those individuals see in their daily lives,” he said. Egan acknowledged he could not quantify many of the potential revenue and savings benefits if same-sex couples could marry. The most solid estimate he cited was $2.6 million the city was losing in hotel and sales tax revenue every year from weddings that can’t take place.

He based the figure on the 5,100 marriage licenses San Francisco issued to same-sex couples during a five-month period in 2008 when gay marriage was legal, as well as on wedding industry data on how much couples spend on average when they tie the knot. “Certainly San Francisco experienced an uptake in weddings (in 2008), and I can conclude with that the economic activity associated with weddings increased as well,” he said. A Columbia University social scientist testified Thursday that his research on how social stigma makes gays more vulnerable to depression, suicide and substance abuse. Ilan Meyer said Proposition 8 provided another source of distress that could create similar mental health problems.

“Basically having a constitutional law say to gay people, ‘You are not welcome here’ — the opposite of that would clearly say, ‘You are welcome here, your relationships are valued, you are valued, we don’t approve of rejection of you as a gay person as a state — that has a lot of power,” Meyer said. A lawyer for the measure’s sponsors, Howard Nielson Jr., used Meyer’s own research showing that black and Latino gays had fewer mental health problems than white gays to try to undercut the professor’s assertion. Meyer had hypothesized in his study that black and Latino gays would have more mental health issues because of their dual minority identities.

Nielson also challenged Meyer’s statement that California‘s domestic partnership law, which grants same-sex couples the same legal benefits and responsibilities as married spouses, was itself a source of stigma and emotional distress. Equality California, the state’s largest gay rights group, sponsored the 2003 law. “Do you believe Equality California would sponsor legislation that would stigmatize (gay) individuals?” Nielson asked.

“No, but that doesn’t change my answer,” Meyer said. “Having a second type of an institution that is clearly not the one that is designed for most people clearly is stigmatizing.”  The trial is scheduled to resume Friday with testimony from Michael Lamb, a Cambridge University psychologist who will discuss gay and lesbian parenting and the benefits to children of allowing same-sex couples to marry. You’ve GOT to see This!

Filed under: Politics — Dr. Christopher Blackwell @ 18:20

I know most of us have experienced an overdose of stupidity from the Republicans over the years, but this is a MUST SEE! As I am sure you’re probably aware, the sharp and highly-intelligent (former) Alaskan Governor and failed Vice President nominee Sarah Palin has been stomping across the United States promoting the sale of her new book Going Rogue. While political scientists and researchers are having a field day exposing all of the gross exaggerations and outright fallacies in the book, the blind faithful are showing up in-support of their dolt. Below, documentarian Chase Whiteside plays it VERY smart by avoiding any type of confrontation with supporters by simply interviewing them on the “issues.” What on folds is a laughable and good ‘ole teabagging time as essentially NONE of them can give any supportive evidence on what makes Sarah Palin so great or their anti-Obama sentiments factual! While ignorance is a conservative’s wet dream, let’s hope the Republicans do elect Palin as their candidate! It will make our jobs as Democrats getting our President re-elected MUCH easier! Take a look. WARNING: You may have to pause the video to rest the laughter muscles in your face!

Obama Pushing for Medical Malpractice Reform

Filed under: Health and Social Policy,Politics — Dr. Christopher Blackwell @ 23:21

View Image  Against strong opposition from the American Trial Lawyer’s Association, President Barack Obama announced today a plan to overhaul the way in which medical malpractice cases are decided in court. President Obama supports the appointment of neutral experts to sift malpractice facts from allegations through the creation of “health courts” that would be headed by medical professionals and experts rather than juries, judges, and attorneys. The American Hospital Association (AHA) has expressed a great deal of support for the measure, says  AHA President Richard Umbdenstock: “We are trying to offer this as a constructive approach, to see if we can generate some interest,” he said. Under this type of plan, patients who claim injury at the hands of medical professionals or institutions would take their case to a local panel of experts appointed by state authorities. The patient wouldn’t have to prove negligence, only that the provider failed to follow established guidelines for clinical practice. To put some evidence behind the idea, Obama has dedicated $25 million to test a range of alternatives to malpractice litigation. This is another great example of the strong leadership and intelligence of President Obama, who is doing what is right to make our healthcare system stronger for our patients as well as the backbone of the system–its nurses and physicians!

Great Grayson Interview

Filed under: Politics — Dr. Christopher Blackwell @ 23:51

There’s been some “controversy” (editor’s note: usually quotation marks in a political thread mean whatever is in quotations has been perpetuated by ridiculous right-wing Republican moronism) around comments made by my Congressman Alan Grayson (of course I voted for him and can’t wait to re-elect him in 2012!). Grayson called out the Republicans for continuing to demonstrate their failure as a Party, highlighting their inability to make much-needed healthcare reform a reality. Today, OpEd (on MSNBC) featured Alan Grayson, who continues to work hard for my district. I applaud him for having the guts to expose the Republicans for what they are–a lie machine. Faux (Fox) News Busted “Making” News

Filed under: Politics — Dr. Christopher Blackwell @ 02:46

faux-news-spinlose Media scientists have been researching the bias of Fox/Faux News Channel for a few years now. Look at the research conducted by Harvard University’s Communication and Media studies department, follow the watchdog group Media Matters, or watch the documentary OutFoxed if you’d like to see some of the scientific analyses. But their biased and laughable coverage hit a pinnacle last week when a producer was actually caught coaching the right wingnut protesters at a 9/12 “protest” to begin cheering loudly and acting angry during filming! Click the URL below to watch both the video of the producer instructing the crowd to escalate their “protest” and how it appeared on Fox/Faux News Channel. PATHETIC! Anyone who thinks this channel is “fair and balanced” should see a psychiatrist! Fox/Faux News Channel is about fabricating stories, skewing statistics, and providing a platform for the moronic right. The good news is that it continues to rate as the least watched 24-hour news channel in the United States. The sad news is that some people actually think it is honest and truly covers the news.  http://mediamatters.org/blog/200909180037.

Dems FINALLY Call a Spade a Spade!

Filed under: Politics — Dr. Christopher Blackwell @ 22:28

democraticimage.jpg   After laughing quite loudly the past few weeks at the ridiculous “I don’t want my child listening to President Obama” crybabies of the still pouting Republican Party, I was VERY pleased to see Democratic leaders finally calling out this “mock” controversy today for what it really is: Sour Racist Grapes!  Complaints about the president’s speech are “ridiculous” according to School Board Member Bob Parks and the 150 Democrats who gathered Monday at Pompano Beach Community Park. Parks was blunt in his assessment of what’s motivating the controversy. “I believe a part of it is underlying racism, and of course the Republicans aren’t in power.” In overwhelmingly Democratic Broward County, Parks said, there really isn’t all that much public angst over the speech.

Parks, who represents a northeastern district, said he’s received only about 15 critical e-mails. Echoing Parks in suggesting a racial element to the controversy was Michael Albetta, president of the Dolphin Democrats gay and lesbian political club. “The racists are waking up and they’re finding out there’s a black man in the White House — and it’s not the butler,” Albetta told the crowd. Broward Democratic Chairman Mitch Ceasar said he sees a different motive. “I see this less as racism than an extreme power grab. This is all about trying to weaken our president to pick up more seats in the next congressional cycle by stirring the pot with fictional ingredients.” With their “Tea Parties,” Townhall fiascos and other ridiculous antics, the Republicans continue to show their true ignorance and underlying motives…

Town Hall “Disruptions” Increasingly Ridiculous

Filed under: Politics — Dr. Christopher Blackwell @ 00:49

antirepublican.jpgAlthough I have been quietly laughing at the Republican-staged “disruptions” at Democratic leaders’ townhall meetings over the past couple of weeks, deeming them largely un-newsworthy, ignorance, bigotry, and stupidity couldn’t be more obvious. From gun-toting morons flashing their holsters and delivering hate-filled speech spewing erroneous “facts” to racist rednecks destroying posters of Rosa Parks or swastika-painting vandals, these displays are becoming more of a “Circus” than Britney Spears’ latest concert tour. And, let’s be honest people. These “protests” consist of nothing more than the same ridiculous sour-puss people who staged the laughable tea-party protests shortly after President Obama was elected. These have NOTHING to do with healthcare reform; these right wingnuts are using healthcare reform as a platform to continue their crying spree over the election of a Black President and a changing American populace who will continue to ensure conservative lunacy maintains its slow and miserable death.

Update: Lou Holtz Won’t Run for Congressional Seat in Florida

Filed under: Politics — Dr. Christopher Blackwell @ 02:54

Go to fullsize imageFormer Notre Dame football coach Lou Holtz says he doesn’t plan to run for Congress. “I’m working for ESPN. I don’t want to run for Congress,” Holtz told WNDU-TV of South Bend on Wednesday at a golf outing in nearby Bridgman, Mich. “All I’m going to do is fulfill the commitment to ESPN. I’m prepared for it and then we’ll go from there.” A GOP strategist said Tuesday that Holtz was considering running as a Republican for the central Florida congressional seat held by Democrat Rep. Suzanne Kosmas. Holtz has never run for office. He has worked as an analyst at ESPN since retiring from his last coaching stint at South Carolina at the end of the 2004 season. This is good news–Suzanne Kosmas has shown to be a tremendous Congressional Representative who is working hard for progressive change this country desperately needs. We need to keep moving forward and not elect conservative Republican celebrities to political office.

Advertisers Wisen-Up, Pulling $ From Glenn Beck

Filed under: Politics — Dr. Christopher Blackwell @ 02:30

Go to fullsize image  Three companies who run ads during Fox News’ Glenn Beck Show– NexisLexis Law Groups, Proctor & Gamble, and Progressive Insurance — today distanced themselves from Beck. LexisNexis has pulled its advertising from Beck and says it has no plans to advertise on the program in the future. Both Proctor & Gamble and Progressive Insurance called the Beck advertising placements an error that they would correct immediately.  The decision by the three companies comes as  after the controversial news host called President Obama a “racist” who “has a deep-seated hatred for white people” on “Fox & Friends” last week.

Nurse Practitioners Key to Healthcare Reform

Filed under: Nursing Science,Politics — Dr. Christopher Blackwell @ 04:08

During the 2008 election year, the American Nurses Association (ANA) endorsed then-candidate Barack Obama. One of the main reasons the ANA endorsed the President was because of his understanding of the importance of the Nursing profession and its vital role in the United States healthcare system. Today, TIME highlighted several areas of Obama’s healthcare reform bill which specifically refers to the importance of Nurse Practitioners in meeting America’s needs for healthcare, particularly in primary and preventative care settings. Currently, less than 10% of all physicians choose primary and preventative care practice settings. Excerpted from the TIME report:

“There is an existing group of providers that health reformers are hoping can help fill this gap: Nurse Practitoners. Depending on the state in which they practice, nurse practitioners, with advanced training often including master’s or doctoral degrees in nursing, can often treat and diagnose patients, as well as prescribe medication. And they can do these things at a lower cost than doctors – Medicare, for example, reimburses nurse practitioners 80% of what is paid to physicians for the same services. As part of health reform, the Administration wants more money for the National Health Service Corps, which offers loan forgiveness to primary-care providers – including nurse practitioners as well as doctors – who agree to work in rural and remote areas. But even if these measures encourage more medical students to pursue careers in general practice, it will take years to have a real impact. Nurse practitioners, on the other hand, require fewer years of training and can therefore bump up their ranks faster. In the recently released House health-reform bill, nurse practitioners (and physician’s assistants, another relatively new, but smaller, category of medical professionals who can perform medical procedures and often prescribe medication) are listed alongside doctors as primary-care providers. Nurse practitioners lobbied hard for this legislative language in meetings with White House health officials, including Nancy-Ann DeParle, Obama’s health-reform czar.”

Important to note, research on healthcare outcomes and patient satisfaction has overwhelmingly suggested Nurse Practitoners provide care that is at least comparable to physicians; some studies even show patients rate interactions with Nurse Practitioners more favorably than those with physicians. Obama and Democratic leaders have an uphill battle in getting true healthcare reform, which is so desperately needed in our country, passed. Yet it remains so refreshing to have leadership with a realistic perception of what really is happening in the US healthcare system and is using nursing scientists and professionals in making policy aimed at improving how America accesses and receives healthcare.
