Kennedy Center’s RAGTIME Wins Big!

Filed under: Performing Arts — Dr. Christopher Blackwell @ 01:12

Although the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts’ Ragtime was short-lived in its Broadway bow, it received heavy accolades on Tuesday when it received 5 Helen Hayes Awards. The Helen Hayes Awards are the Washington, DC version of the Tony Awards. With over 53 resident theaters in the Capitol, Washington DC has a very vibrant and thriving performing arts district, including the Kennedy Center, which has been named as the most outstanding theater in the United States. Ragtime earned five Hayes Awards including Outstanding Resident Musical, Outstanding Director Resident Musical (Marcia Milgrom Dodge), Outstanding Lead Actress Resident Musical (Christiane Noll) and Outstanding Costume Design Resident Musical (Santo Loquasto and Jimm Halliday). I was unbelievably lucky to be able to see the Kennedy Center’s Ragtime last Summer with my best friend Annie on our trip to DC. The show was incredible! Although it was heavily scaled-down compared to its original 1996 production at Broadway’s Ford Center for the Performing Arts (now the Hilton Theater), the show was beautifully staged, well-acted, and just as moving as that 1996 spectacle. It is sad that it did not succeed on its return to the Broadway stage during a harsh economic climate where shows were closing on a near-daily basis. Nonetheless, Ragtime is well-deserved of the honors it has earned! Congratulations to all involved with the amazing Kennedy Center production!

Webber’s Cancer Delays Phantom Sequel’s Broadway Transition

Filed under: Performing Arts — Dr. Christopher Blackwell @ 01:03

The Phantom: Love Never Dies, the sequel to The Phantom of the Opera, which opened at London’s Adelphi Theatre on March 9th, has been temporarily postponed because of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s ongoing battle with prostate cancer. Although Webber’s cancer was diagnosed early and its growth halted, he has been suffering from complications related to his treatment. In addition, long flights Webber would need to take to travel back and forth from New York City to London is contraindicated for him at this time. An April 6 statement from the show’s producers says that the original date was set prior to Lloyd Webber’s diagnosis with prostate cancer last fall. “Although the cancer has been eradicated, there have been post-operative problems,” according to the statement. “These have been aggravated by recent air travel and Lloyd Webber’s doctors have requested that he does not take any further long-haul flights for the time being and until the problem has been investigated. This prevents him attending auditions and being part of the pre-production process in New York on the original schedule.” A date has not yet been set but Love Never Dies will now be scheduled to open at Broadway’s Neil Simon Theater in the Spring of 2011.

Christina is “Not Myself Tonight”

Filed under: Popular Music — Dr. Christopher Blackwell @ 01:26

Bionic

Pop superstar Christina Aguilera has pre-released her new single “Not Myself Tonight” from her forthcoming album Bionic. Inspired by the nonstop success of Lady GaGa, the new track is much more “pop” and is heavy on the synth. It’s a bit of a departure from Aguilera’s earlier works, which had more of an R&B type infusion. It’s a great tune and it’s definitely catchy. We might just have a new hit from Christina with this one. Take a listen below. Bionic releases June 8th from RCA Records.

Republican Party Leaders Involved in Spending Scandal

Filed under: Politics — Dr. Christopher Blackwell @ 02:12

antirepublican.jpg Closely scrutinized documents detailing Republican spending, particularly by Chairmen Michael Steele, show the party wasting large amounts of money frivolously. Steele’s travel records indicated he used thousands upon thousands of dollars to charter private flights from various airports (violating the party’s own policies on strict use of commercial flights). Steele also lives on the Republican hog quite lavishly. A February RNC trip to California, for example, included a $9,099 stop at the Beverly Hills Hotel, $6,596 dropped at the nearby Four Seasons, and $1,946. 25 spent at Voyeur West Hollywood, a bondage-themed nightclub featuring topless women dancers imitating lesbian sex. The club caters to interest in sadomasochism and other types of domination sexual fetishes. Not that this new is any real surprise; it’s just another example of the ridiculousness that is the Republican Party.

Donnie Jones Takes Over Knights’ Basketball

Filed under: UCF Sports — Dr. Christopher Blackwell @ 01:46

Donnie Jones - 2006 Final Four The UCF Knights Basketball program has hired a new Captain. Donnie Jones is leaving Marshall University to become the next coach at UCF. Jones has only been the head coach at Marshall for 3 seasons; but the Tundering Herd rose quickly to success on the court, landing in the top of Conference USA and ended 2009-2010 with a 24-10 record. Marshall made their first postseason appearance for the first time in 22 years. Prior to his position at Marshall, Jones was an Assistant at the University of Florida. UCF parted ways with long-time coach Kirk Speraw, who finished this season with a losing record (15-16) at the bottom of Conference USA. UCF Athletic Director Kieth Tribble praised Jones for his strong recruiting skill and cited Jones’ abilities to bring strong recruits to Huntington. Tribble also mentioned to Jones that UCF is strongly pursuing a position in the Big East should the league expand in the not-too-distant future.

History Made! House PASSES Healthcare Reform Bill!

Filed under: Health and Social Policy,Politics — Dr. Christopher Blackwell @ 00:43

The Urgent Need for Health Reform

In a historic night, the United States House of Representatives has PASSED the Healthcare Reform Bill! The vote was 219-212 with the vast majority of Democrats voting “Yes” while the Republicans voted “No.” Republicans also failed to stall the Bill by attempting to argue language in the Bill related to abortions (which will NOT be eligible for federal funding). The Bill has been largely edited since its original inception. In its original form, the Bill included a comprehensive public healthcare option which would’ve provided coverage of the uninsured through a government-subsidized insurance plan. The new plan has some provisions for subsidization of the uninsured and underinsured through a sliding scale and provides financial incentives, mostly through pooling of money (particularly among small business owners), to augment insurance coverage to those who usually fail to obtain health insurance because their employer cannot afford to help provide it or the employee cannot afford to pay for the coverage themselves. Perhaps more importantly, however, are the strong provisions placed in the Bill to protect consumers from tactics used by insurance companies to deny coverage, escalate copays and deductibles, and limit the affordability and portability of health insurance policies.

The Bill was largely supported by healthcare’s professional organizations; the American Nurses Association, American College of Nurse Practitioners, American Medical Association, America Hospital Association, American Association of Retired Persons, and National Association of Social Workers all strongly endorsed the Bill and issued supportive proposal statement encouraging members to support the Bill. Personally, as a Nurse Practitioner who has worked in the acute care arena for almost a decade, I applaud this Bill greatly! Our practice has seen the number of uninsured patients rise dramatically over the past several years. While I personally am reimbursed for my services through our practice, our practice never receives a dime of payment for the services we provide to these patients. Sometimes, the number of uninsured have approached 30% of our patient population. Ultimately, the hospital obtains tax breaks and other financial incentives for caring for these patients through tax-payer funded mechanisms; but rarely are the actual total costs ever covered and the lack of insurance leads to a perpetuation of broken care and rapid re-entrance into the healthcare system to continue to rely on tax-payer funded care that has no choice but to be substandard. The US Department of Health and Human Services provides an analysis of how the BIll will effect each state. You can access Florida here:

This is the change we need! If your Representative voted “Yes” on Healthcare Reform (Suzanne Kosmas–the representative for the UCF Area voted “Yes”), take a moment to send him or her a “Thank-You” E-Mail or letter. If your Representative did not vote in-favor for the Bill, show him or her your appreciation at the voting booth and vote him or her OUT OF OFFICE!!!

Representative Tim Ryan Denouces “Teabaggers”

Filed under: Health and Social Policy,Politics — Dr. Christopher Blackwell @ 17:34

While normally I would be determined to ignore such rhetoric for fear of giving it any kind of attention, today on the House Floor, Representative Tim Ryan denounced the disgusting and moronic “teabaggers” who spewed racist and homophobic slurs to Congressmen Barney Frank and John Lewis (also spitting on Lewis) yesterday. Some Republicans have attempted to distance themselves from the behavior while others, like Devin Nunes (R-CA), have actually defended it! Take a look at Ryan’s response below, where he slams the Republicans for endorsing the moron “teabaggers” who continue to demonstrate their complete lack of intelligence and inability to understand how vital this reform bill is for the nation’s healthcare system (despite its endorsement from every major reputable nursing, medical, and hospital profesional organization). Regardless, the Bill now looks like it has the necessary 216 votes to pass, making their attempts not only laughable, but futile as well.

Simply Mind Boggling

Filed under: Politics — Dr. Christopher Blackwell @ 02:03

Despite the fact the most reputable healthcare organizations within the United States have endorsed the Healthcare Reform Bill coming up for a vote in the House of Representatives on Sunday, the ignorant contiue to spew their stupidity and Faux News talking points trying to scare policymakers into voting against the measure. The Healthcare Reform Bill is endorsed by the American Nurses Association (the professional organization representing the nation’s nursing workforce), the American Medical Association (the professional organization representing the nation’s physician workforce), the American Hospital Association (the professional organization representing the nation’s public, for-profit, and non-profit hospitals), the American Association of Social Workers (the professional organization representing the nation’s social workers), and the American Association of Retired Persons (the national advocacy group representing the nation’s senior citizens).

Ironically, regardless of the hard work and research these groups have put into their analyses of the Bill, conservative dolts who know absolutely nothing about healthcare are causing a debate when there should be none to begin with. Below, watch the responses given to simple questions posed by a journalism student to “Tea Baggers” lobbying in Washington, DC to defeat the Healthcare Reform Bill. Besides false and inflammatory talking points from Faux News and the brainless Glenn Beck, none are able to articulate a single specific point from the Bill. Going into this weekend, I encourage you to contact your Representative to show you stand behind our nation’s health experts and realize just how salient passing this Bill truly is. I have sent several letters of support to my Congresswoman Suzanne Kosmas. She indicated today that she will vote “Yes” on Healthcare Reform! For the sake of our nation and our nation’s healthcare system, this Bill is a must!

Faux News Blasts New Lady GaGa Video–HILARIOUS–A MUST SEE!!!

Filed under: Popular Music — Dr. Christopher Blackwell @ 00:24

Go to fullsize image While I HATE to give Fox (or more appropriately, Faux) News any attention, this video is simply a MUST SEE!!! I laughed at these two idiots from start to finish. You have to watch this for yourself as these Faux News “reporters” discuss just how “disgusting” Lady GaGa’s “Telephone” video is and even suggest benefits to censorship! While media scientists and researchers discredited Fox News a long time ago (for more information, rent the documentary Outfoxed!), this laughable commentary is simply irresistible! The two are just “horrified” by the social results of such filth! LOL And listen to one of them describe how she taught her son how to interpret what media are socially moral and which are not! Too bad for her son and all other adolescents–They just can’t seem to be able to define what is fiction and what is not. LOL Like I said, take a look. As sad as this is, it is really a hoot!
