Ragtime to Close on Broadway

Filed under: Performing Arts — Dr. Christopher Blackwell @ 01:56

Very sad news was released yesterday from the producers of Ragtime, the newly conceived and critically-acclaimed revival of one of the best musicals to ever grace the stage. After just 2 months, Ragtime will close. The last performance for the freshly-imagined show, which got its start last Summer in Washington, DC’s Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, will be this Sunday, January 3rd. While the show is a favorite among theater-goers, its large budget, 40-piece orchestra, and large cast made Ragtime an expensive production that had been rumored to be too costly to keep afloat. No word just yet on whether or not the new production will tour. If you’re in New York City before January 3rd, do yourself a favor and see Ragtime at the Neil Simon Theatre.

Research to be Published in Social Work in Public Health

Filed under: Nursing Science — Dr. Christopher Blackwell @ 22:39

Publication Cover Great news! I just received a confirmation E-Mail from the editor of Social Work in Public Health informing me my research article “Requests for Bareback Sex and HIV Serostatus among Men who Have Sex with Men Using Internet Sexual Networking Sites to Initiate Sexual Relationships” has been ACCEPTED for publication! Social Work in Public Health is a crucial journal focusing on all aspects of policy and social and health care considerations in policy-related matters, including its development, formulation, implementation, evaluation, review, and revision. By blending conceptual and practical considerations, Social Work in Public Health enables authors from many disciplines to examine health and social policy issues, concerns, and questions. Dr. Mary Lou Sole partnered with me in the work, providing great assistance in the statistical analyses of my research. Below is the APA Citation and Abstract:

Blackwell, C.W. & Sole, M.L.S. (In Press). Requests for bareback sex and HIV serostatus among sen who have sex with men using Internet sexual networking sites to initiate sexual relationships. Social Work in Public Health.

Abstract: The use of Internet sexual networking sites is becoming a more prominent means for men who have sex with men (MSM) to initiate sexual relationships. The widespread use of such sites provides quick and often more anonymous access to the initiation of sexual relationships, which research suggests can make an impact on sexual decision making. This article presents findings from an original research study assessing the association between active requests for condomless (bareback) sex through personal Internet sexual profiles and HIV serostatus in a sample of MSM in Florida (n = 483). The findings indicated a statistically significant association between those men who actively requested bareback (BB) sex in their profile and HIV status. The association was significant for HIV-positive serostatus and unknown/non-disclosed HIV serostatus.  This suggests clinicians should consider the possible use of Internet sexual networking sites when discussing safer sex practices with their MSM clients, and specific public health strategies should be designed that promote safer sex practices among MSM using the Internet to initiate sexual relationships.

Knights Fall to Rutgers in St. Pete Bowl

Filed under: Animal Welfare,UCF Sports — Dr. Christopher Blackwell @ 04:24

UCF wide receiver Rocky Ross runs the ball in the first quarter of the St. Petersburg Bowl game between the UCF Knights and the Rutgers Scarlet Knights in St. Petersburg, Fla.

Unfortunately, the success of the UCF Knights’ (8-5; 6-2 C-USA) regular season didn’t translate over to their appearance against Rutgers (9-4; 3-4 Big East) in the St. Petersburg Bowl yesterday. The Knights struggled offensively and defensively against the Scarlett Knights, who were able to capitalize on several UCF turnovers and dice-apart UCF’s passing defense. Despite a return all the way to the 50 yard-line in the first drive of the game, Senior Quarterback Brett Hodges’ interception took the wind out of UCF’s sails early and gave Rutgers a scoring drive.

While UCF would answer back, down just 4 points going into the half (and less than 2 minutes remaining), Hodges threw another interception, resulting in an immediate Rutgers’ touchdown. UCF struggled during the second half as well, scoring just once. The final score was 45-24. UCF now looks to preparations in the off-season and prepares to return to C-USA competition in 2o10. Out-of-conference games next season include a road trip to Kansas State and a home game against the NC State Wolfpack. Despite the bowl loss, UCF had a fantastic season with their first ever win over a ranked opponent (#13 Houston).

The Cove and Ringling Brothers

Filed under: Animal Welfare — Dr. Christopher Blackwell @ 04:23

If you’ve not heard of the documentary The Cove, then I strongly recommend you head-down to your local Blockbuster or Redbox and get a copy of this movie. It will break your heart and have you searching your soul wondering how anyone could ever abuse and slaughter such beautiful and amazingly intelligent animals like dolphins. The documentary follows a group of American marine biologists and researchers who struggle to covertly document the horrific dolphin slaughters occurring in Taijii, Japan. Once you learn of the barbaric practices and disgusting animal abuse being inflicted on these amazing animals, your heartbreak will soon turn to anger. To learn more about The Cove, visit the film’s official Site @ thecovemovie.com.

In equally horrific related news, photographic evidence emerged today from an undercover investigation into elephant abuses being perpetrated by Ringling Brothers and Barnum Bailey Circus. The photographs shows disgusting examples of how “trainers” whip baby elephants and use electric shock devices and bullhooks to subdue them. Explore the Site ringlingbeatsanimals.com and although difficult, watch the undercover videos and pictures of subhuman “trainers” whipping the elephants without provocation; and even  listen to one of them bully and taunt an elephant by swearing at it while whipping it.

These cases are especially difficult to watch and are even harder to stomach. But, we need to educate people about what is happening. Ignoring these incidences only allows them to perpetuate. Discourage people from patronizing Ringling Brothers Circuses. Watch The Cove and take a minute to write to our leaders encouraging them to fight these exploitations. Finally, open your checkbook and join The Humane Society of the United States. Education and hard work can make a difference. And subhumans who abuse animals can be brought to justice.

A Disgusting Case of Animal Cruelty

Filed under: Animal Welfare — Dr. Christopher Blackwell @ 02:27

A Whitehaven Veterinarian is working to save a dog’s life, after the dog was thrown from a speeding truck on I-40 in Memphis, Tennessee during rush hour Monday. Dr. Greg Shaw was cautiously optimistic late Monday night that the dog, nicknamed Savior, would survive. But Savior is certainly not out of the woods. She not only suffered injures from being thrown from the moving vehicle, she also appears to have bite marks from being used in fights.

Mario Chiozza was driving along I-40 East of Sycamore View when he saw someone throw the dog from a white pick-up truck. He says the dog was thrown in the middle lane, but she managed to run over to the side of the interstate. Chiozza just so happens to be a strong animal advocate and rescue worker. He also happened to have a catch pole in his truck. He used it to catch Savior. Another driver, and off-duty deputy, stopped to help Chiozza load the dog into the back of his truck.

He knew he didn’t have much time, so he rushed Savior to Pets Choice Animal Clinic on Shelby Drive in Whitehaven. Dr. Shaw immediately stated working to save her life. Chiozza is hoping someone else may have witnessed the incident, and caught the license plate of the White Ford Pick-Up involved. “I know one thing, we’re going to need help. This baby’s going to need help,” he says. If you have info on the incident, call CrimeStoppers @ (901) 528-CASH.

If you would like to help with Savior’s medical needs, you can call Pets Choice Animal Clinic at (901) 881-6212, or email shawvet@gmail.com. Hopefully, someone will come forward with the identity of this despicable excuse of a human so he can be prosecuted to the FULLEST extent of the law!

It’s the Knights vs. the Knights in St. Pete!!!

Filed under: UCF Sports — Dr. Christopher Blackwell @ 01:12

  vs.

Today, officials from the St. Petersburg Bowl (8/19, 8pm on ESPN) offered the Scarlet Knights of Rutgers the Big East spot of the game to take on the UCF Knights! UCF was offered the Conference USA slot last week. The Scarlet Knights (8-4; 3-4 Big East) ended their regular season of play on Saturday with a close (24-21) loss to #16 West Virginia. UCF (8-4; 6-2 C-USA) finished their regular season with a defeat of the UAB Blazers (34-27) last Saturday. The way the two teams’ seasons ended, the UCF Knights will have an extra week under their belt to rest and prepare for final exams, which begin at UCF this week. Rutgers, on the other hand, immediately enters practice. Plus, the game will be in the middle of their final exam week. The Knights actually stack-up fairly well against each other:

– The Scarlet Knights rank No. 20 nationally in rushing defense (109 yards allowed per game), No. 42 in passing defense (203 yards allowed per game) and No. 19 in total defense (312 yards allowed per game).

– UCF ranks No. 4 nationally in rushing defense (83 yards allowed per game), No. 70 in passing defense (210 yards allowed per game) and No. 46 in total defense (348 yards allowed per game).

A big advantage for the UCF Knights is that the game is only 126 miles from their campus; and UCF has already sold over 12,000 tickets to the game, selling-out their student ticket allotment in just 2 days. Tickets for the St. Petersburg Bowl are cheap at only $30 (plus service fees and taxes) Tickets should be purchased only through the UCF Athletics Ticket Office (ucfbowl.com). This game is going to be exciting and it is going to be great to get the chance to cheer-on the UCF Knights one more time this year! GO BLACK & GOLD!!! BEAT RUTGERS!!!

UCF Knights to St. Petersburg Bowl

Filed under: UCF Sports — Dr. Christopher Blackwell @ 15:53

St. Petersburg Bowl The UCF Knights football team has a post-season destination but their opponent is yet to be named. Sources close to the St. Petersburg Bowl (December 19th, 8pm on ESPN) have confirmed that the Knights will be given a bid to the Bowl today. UCF will hold a press conference at 2pm to accept the bid. UCF will play an opponent from the Big East Conference. As of now, their three possible opponents are Rutgers, Connecticut, and USF. The Big East concludes its regular season this Saturday so UCF may not learn which team they will face until after Saturday. The St. Petersburg Bowl is the second best bowl tie-in for Conference USA and carries a $1 million payout. Only the Liberty Bowl, which pits C-USA’s Champion against an SEC opponent, pays more at $1.7 million. The UCF Colleges of Nursing and Health & Public Affairs Alumni Chapters will hold a Tailgate Party for the event. More news to follow.Congrats to the Knights for securing C-USA’s second best bowl game!
